UGA Football History

When the University of Georgia’s football team was established in January 1892, it was the first squad of its kind to be found anywhere in the Deep South. In the subsequent twenty-five years, until the United States’ entry into the First World War in April 1917 brought a temporary end to the football program, the fortunes of the University of Georgia’s gridiron teams waxed and waned. The teams endured tragedy and struggle in establishing Georgia as a football power.

Tragedy hit the Georgia program in 1897, and as a result, the sport of football came dangerously close to being banned in the state of Georgia. The untimely passing of Von Gammon put a shadow over the football program at the university for the remainder of the 1890s and into the 1900s. Despite these challenges, the Georgia program was maintained during these years due to the players’ unwavering devotion and commitment to the team.

When Steadman Sanford arrived in Georgia in 1903 to take a position as a professor of English Literature, the state’s football program’s luck began to turn for the better. In 1907, Sanford became the faculty advisor for the school’s sports programs. Alex Cunningham was the first Georgia coach to last for more than two years, and his coaching stint ushered in a new era for the team, which had been predominantly poor since the late 1890s. Cunningham’s success as a coach helped the club break out of its slump.

After the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, the University of Georgia concluded that it would be best to put its athletics programs on indefinite hiatus for the length of the war. After this period, the Georgia football program solidified its position as a dominant force in the area. The program had broken out of the slump it had been in since the late 1890s and into the 1900s, and there was a renewed interest in the sport on campus and among alumni.
